On Sunday, February 26, 2012 from 4 to 5 p.m., Pacific time with other times listed below, we are going to have a special guest joining us in Our Cozy Kitchen, Ms. Rita Kersh.
Ms. Kersh wrote a book, “Pathway to Independence: A guide for people with vision loss” which was written by her and published in December 2011. This book discusses all areas of techniques of daily living in the home from the kitchen and general organizational skills involving the entire house for persons with vision loss, both partials and totals.
Ms. Kersh got her first hearing aid at age 13, and at age 16 was told that she had Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). She was, as a young adult, told that she had Usher Disease, Type II. Ms. Kersh is deaf in one ear and has a hearing aid in the other ear and is also acquainted with rehab teaching with the deaf/blind community as well.
Ms. Kersh graduated in 1983 from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1987 with a Master’s degree in Blind Rehabilitation Teaching. She was a certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist for 20 years.
Upon graduation with a Master’s in Rehab Teaching, Ms. Kersh was hired in August, 1987 as a Rehabilitation Instructor at the Addie McBryde Rehabilitation Center for the Blind in Jackson, Mississippi. During her employment at this center, she was an instructor in the areas of Personal Management, Techniques of Daily Living and Communications. She became a Deaf-blind Specialist in September, 2003 and worked with clients who were deaf-blind in the Communications area and as a Program Manager. She retired in January 2008 after 20 ½ years with this employer.
Again, please join us in Our Cozy Kitchen on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the times listed below for a program that promises to be full of thoughts, ideas, helpful hints, and yes, questions from the audience.
